Young Hollywood Out Of Control: When Will It End?

(December 13, 2006) — Despite what Britney, Lindsay and Paris seem to be doing every night, partying in Hollywood is far from a new phenomenon.

But partying and being followed by the paparazzi all the time is a different story.

Of course, that doesn’t excuse much of the behavior we’ve seen lately from Hollywood’s celebutantes. In fact, it’s behavior that has many people asking when will enough be enough?

Cameras caught their first glimpse of Nicole Richie following her DUI arrest as she left new boyfriend Joel Madden’s house and was surprised by the waiting paparazzi. She quickly went back inside, only to re-emerge with a purple blanket covering her face. And it looks like she also has a new accessory – a driver.

As for pal Paris, she keeps on partying, with cameras capturing her table dancing in New York.

And as far as Britney goes, she hit yet another nightclub. And while she remembered underwear this time (we hope), she forgot to put on a bra. Perhaps her sheer white top wasn’t the best choice this time.

Then there’s Lindsay Lohan who has been a tabloid mainstay of late.

“I don’t want people to know me for the lies that are written about me in the tabloids,” Lindsay contends.

But is it all blown out of proportion or is young Hollywood really out of control? Let’s look at the facts?

But again, young celebrities getting into trouble is anything but a new concept.

The 90s had Shannen Doherty’s ‘90210’ crew and the 80s had the Brat Pack – each with their own share of troubles. Just look at Charlie Sheen’s drug past and Rob Lowe’s sex tape scandal.

Charlie’s brother-in-law and fellow Brat Packer Emilio Estevez says one thing makes it more intense now – the constant following.

“In the 80s when you were back in that young, hot scene, there weren’t blogs and there weren’t all these things,” Emilio told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush.

“Do you think it would have ruined you back then?” Billy asked.

“It’s quite possible because every move is documented,” Emilio admitted.

Estevez isn’t the only star who is appreciative that the world of blogs and paparazzi wasn’t always a prevalent issue.

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but luckily I never had to do them publicly,” Jamie Lee Curtis told Access. “There’s something really at work here that’s very disturbing and the message to young women out there can’t be that that’s an acceptable behavior.”

Nicollette Sheridan also started out in young Hollywood.

“I’m just happy that nobody’s been hurt,” she added.

So how bad does it have to get before young Hollywood changes its wild ways? Access Hollywood producer Michael Lewittes has been tracking these stars for more than a decade.

“Someone will have to be seriously injured or die in order for these young celebrities to stop and realize what they are doing how they can harm not only themselves, but other people,” Lewittes explained.

But is the damage already done for other starlets? Is it once a bad girl, always a bad girl?

“It’s tried especially because the last time I did something controversial was probably like seven years ago,” Shannen Doherty said of her bad girl reputation.

Actress Tara Reid, who has had her own share of tabloid headlines, said she feels unjustly vilified.

“You don’t see me getting a DUI. You don’t see me getting arrested. You don’t see me going to rehab like all these other girls, but you guys have tagged me as the drunk girl.”
