Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu. He was born to a white American mother, Ann Dunham, and a black Kenyan father, Barack Obama, Sr., who met while studying at the University of Hawaii. When his father left for Harvard, she and Barack stayed behind, and his father later returned to Kenya.

When Barack was six, his mother married an Indonesian oil manager and they moved to Jakarta. He later returned to Hawaii, and was raised by his maternal grandparents. His father wrote to him regularly but visited only once, when Barack was ten.

Obama attended Columbia University, and became a community organizer for a small Chicago church-based group for three years. He then attended Harvard Law School, and in 1990 became the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review. After graduating, he turned down a prestigious clerkship to practice civil-rights law, representing victims of housing and employment discrimination. Barack Obama later ran as a Democrat for the state senate seat from his district, which included Hyde Park and some of the poorest areas on the South Side, and won.

In 2004, Barack was elected to the U.S. Senate representing Illinois as a Democrat, and gained national attention by being coined as “the rising star of the Democratic Party” when he gave a keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

In 2008, he ran for president as a Democrat and won, becoming the first African-American president. Barack Obama is now the 44th president of the United States.
