-- The Oscar-winning actor met with the U.S. territory’s governor Sunday and urged him to oppose a hotel project planned for a patch of northeastern coastal land that environmentalists are trying to protect.
“If this keeps going the way it’s going, Puerto Rico will be one big chunk of cement,” The San Juan Star quoted Del Toro as saying at a press conference.
The 39-year-old actor met with residents of the Pinones section of Loiza, just east of San Juan, where opponents of the proposed development have raised concerns about environmental damage.
“My position is to give a little bit of me to all `Pinoneros.’ And to bring attention to a moral cause and pass that on to the governor so he can help with what there is left,” Del Toro said.
Del Toro won a best supporting actor Oscar for his role in 2000’s “Traffic.” His screen credits also include 2003’s “21 Grams.”
