AUSTIN, Texas --

Bill Murray has made audiences laugh in dozens of films over his three-decade-plus career, but he says one stands above the rest.

“I think the first 45 minutes of ‘Ghostbusters’ were about as funny as a movie gets,” he told an audience at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, on Thursday. “We didn’t have a lot of special effects then, just a couple. It was just the funny characters in that world.”

Though he didn’t have kind words for “Ghostbusters 2,” he has higher hopes for a possible third installment, which is currently in development at Columbia Pictures. “The Office” scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky signed on to pen the script earlier this month.

“I heard they’ve hired two guys from ‘The Office’ to write the script, so that could work, I think that’s a good idea,” he said.

And, he said, he could be ready to fire up his proton pack again.

“I think the wounds of ‘Ghostbusters 2’ have healed,” said Bill, who felt that the second film faltered because the special effects people got to the script early.

“It was hard to wrangle because it was tied all around the effects without the story coming first or the characters moving through it,” he said. “They’re hard movies to write, and Dan [Aykroyd] really caught it with that first one.”

Aykroyd wrote the first two “Ghostbusters” films, in which he also starred.

Murray found himself back in on ghostbusting duty after voicing his character, Peter Venkman, for the upcoming “Ghostbusters” video game over the summer. The game is due Oct. 31.

“It was fun to do it again. I found myself walking down Fifth Avenue singing the [theme] song. People were like, God, that guy’s really full of himself,” he joked.
