overview
Singer and activist Bono, whose real name is Paul Hewson, joined the band U2 in 1976 while he was still in high school. The band began touring but didn't release their first album, “Boy.” until 1980. Four studio albums later, the one that finally cemented their worldwide fame was “The Joshua Tree,” in 1987. And since then, U2 has always had a well-deserved reputation for innovation and pushing the limits.
Bono has been responsible for writing most of the U2 lyrics over the years with emphasis on non-traditional themes like religion and politics. He's always been associated with social causes and has performed at events like Live Aid and Live 8. In the past decade, he has become increasingly involved with third-world debt relief and raising awareness about the plight of Africa.
