Carey Mulligan may be about to live the high life on the big screen.

The British beauty has been tapped as leading lady Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film remake of “The Great Gatsby,” according to Deadline.

“I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world’s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting,” Luhrmann told Deadline. “However, specific to this particular production of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: ‘Hello, Daisy Buchanan.’”

Mulligan will play opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, who has long been rumored to play Jay Gatsby in the film, although no official confirmation by the studio has been announced.

Tobey Maguire has also reportedly been in talks to join the cast as the story’s narrator (and Daisy’s second cousin) Nick Carraway, as has Ben Affleck in the role of Tom Buchanan.

Among the leading ladies Mulligan reportedly beat out for the part were Keira Knightley, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Amanda Seyfried.

The 25-year-old Mulligan received her first Oscar nomination last year for her role in “An Education.” She recently starred alongside rumored off-screen beau Shia LaBeouf in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” and in the likely Oscar contending fall film “Never Let Me Go.”

She is currently shooting the action thriller “Drive,” co-starring Ryan Gosling and Bryan Cranston.

When contacted by Access Hollywood, Columbia Tri-Star Pictures, the studio behind the “Gatsby” project, had no comment on the reported casting.

However, a source close to the production told Access no deals have been made yet with any of the stars since the project has yet to officially be greenlit.
