overview

Amy Winehouse is one of the most controversial young singers in the music business today – and, one of the most appealing.

The British singer hit superstardom in 2007 with the release of her second full-length studio album, the Mark Ronson-produced "Back To Black," which sold over 1 million copies over the first summer of its release on U.S. soil, fueled by the hit single, "Rehab."

The album's music hearkened back to a 1950s girl-group sound that called upon influences of jazz and soul, unheard of for a 24-year-old Caucasian girl from Northern London.

However, the single became a case of life imitating art, when Amy's own substance abuse problems lead her into rehab, in late January 2008. To add to her hardships, her new husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, was incarcerated in late 2007.

She wasn't down-and-out for long though. At the 2008 Grammys, the singer cleaned up, winning 5 out of 6 awards for which she was nominated!
