LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Jay-Z and Lady Gaga have joined the list of 2009 MTV Video Music Awards performers.
The stars will join a number of acts set to take the stage at the annual awards show on Sept. 13, including Green Day, Pink, Taylor Swift and Muse.
Gaga is up for nine VMAs, including Video of the Year, while Jay-Z is up for a pair of awards, Best Male Video and Best Hip Hop for “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune).”
And among the presenters, new additions include Nelly Furtado, “Gossip Girl” star Leighton Meester and “iCarly” star Miranda Cosgrove. Russell Brand will return to host the show for a second consecutive year after a controversial performance at the 2008 ceremony.
As the musicians begin to gear up for the awards, at least one band is already worried about its chances.
“I swear to God, I think we might come in last place. Or maybe second to last,” Kings of Leon Jared Followill told MTV News backstage at Lollapalooza.
The band is nominated for Best Rock Video for “Use Somebody” alongside such heavy hitters as Fall Out Boy, Coldplay, Green Day and Paramore.
“I hope we do win,” guitarist Matthew Followill said. “It would be nice. It would be cool.”
