LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
The modern rock charts have been dominated by a number of veteran acts in recent years, from Green Day to Pearl Jam. But one new band is about to change that.
Paramore, fronted by 20-year-old singer Hayley Williams, is set to make a big splash next week when the quintet releases its third album, “Brand New Eyes.”
Though they’re young – bassist Jeremy Davis is the band’s oldest member at 24 – Paramore has already logged dozens of dates on the road as part of the Warped Tour and a co-headlining trek with Jimmy Eat World. And they earned another wave of fans (and fanpires) thanks to “Decode,” the lead single from the “Twilight” soundtrack.
In fact, if there’s anyone left who’s not yet a Paramore fan, “Brand New Eyes” should win him or her over. It’s an album filled with energetic, hard-hitting tracks and memorable choruses nailed by the big-voiced Hayley. First single “Ignorance” is a throwback to the band’s edgy, pop-punk roots, but songs such as the Coldplay-like “The Only Exception” show off the group’s softer side. Hayley’s lyrics are full of feelings of doubt and the struggle to find true love, emotions that ring true no matter one’s age.
Track for track, it’s as good an album as any that have hit rock radio in recent years, right up there with the Green Days and Coldplays of the world – and with time on its side, Paramore will be batting its “Eyes” alongside the greats for many years to come.
