A number of Michael Jackson’s family and friends gathered to honor the star at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Saturday night, an event sponsored by the Jackson Family Foundation that the King of Pop’s longtime friend, Corey Feldman, called “very nice.”
“As a matter of fact, I switched gears very dramatically because I just came from a function with the family at the Beverly Hilton,” he explained to AccessHollywood.com on the red carpet at the Playboy Mansion, where he arrived in a polka-dot suit for the “Kandyland” party celebrating the DVD and Blu-ray release of “Hot Tub Time Machine.”
“It was very nice actually, I was sad that I had to miss the last half because I had to get here,” he added.
Corey said that he spoke at the event, which included Katherine Jackson, Tito Jackson and other family members.
“I gave a bit of a speech and hopefully I did all right,” Corey told Access, adding that he hadn’t been able to give his well-wishes to the whole family.
“I didn’t see everybody because I was kind of sitting at my table and there were a lot of people coming up and saying hello,” he said. “I got a chance to see Tito and he was great, I got a chance to see Mrs. Jackson and she was doing wonderful.
“She’s barreling through it and she’s a strong woman and God bless her. I’m so proud of her for being able to make it through this so steadily,” he continued.
Of the Mansion, Corey explained that coming to the iconic residence also had familial feelings for him.
“I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. I know I’m not supposed to say that, but it’s true,” he revealed. “I’ve been coming here since I was 15 years old. Hef’s kind of like family.”
While Corey was supportive of Saturday night’s event, one Jackson family member took to his Twitter to share his displeasure with the event and the Jackson Family Foundation.
“Let me be clear, there’s no legitimate ‘Jackson Family Foundation’ that my brothers & sisters are aware of,” Randy Jackson Tweeted on Saturday. “As far as I am concerned, tonight’s event is a fraud…. I know my parents would not be involved if they really knew the characters they have aligned themselves with.”
For his and his siblings’ part, Randy, Janet and other members of the Jackson family honored their brother’s memory by visiting his gravesite at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, Calif., on Friday — the one-year anniversary of Michael’s death.
