Daniel Radcliffe heads to cable’s Ovation later this summer for the premiere of the second season of “A Young Doctor’s Notebook and Other Stories,” which he co-stars in with Jon Hamm.

The first season of the drama, which is inspired by the works of Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov, saw the two actors (who play the same part, just different ages), in a variety of close quarters – including a bathtub. And Season 2 will feature the pair dancing together. Appearing via satellite (from NYC) at the Television Critics Association Summer Tour in Beverly Hills, Daniel explained the two actors have a fair amount of fun doing those sorts of scenes in their dark comedy.

“On a whole, this series is an incredibly fun one to film,” Daniel said. “Jon is a very funny guy, and sort of very irreverent and… we have a lot of fun, particularly like doing the bath scene in the first series is one that we kind of — as soon as we both got in it, we were like, ‘Oh man, this photo is going to go everywhere!’ And you sort of were aware of like the bizarreness of the situation.

“Dancing with Jon in this [season] was great fun. I had to dip him at one point, which is not easy,” Daniel added, seemingly referring to their height differences. “We got a couple of lifts in there as well.”

Daniel plays a morphine addicted MD in “A Young Doctor’s Notebook and Other Stories,” and one reporter asked the star whether he picks projects like the Ovation series (an import from the UK), or his Broadway roles (he is currently starring in “The Cripple of Inishmaan”) to move away from “Harry Potter,” or just because he loves diversity. Daniel said keeping it different keeps it exciting for him as an actor.

“Yeah, it really is about that, about the fact that that’s the most exciting way of doing my job, I think, is to try and do as many different styles — not just styles of film — but of TV show and theater… Obviously there’s a part of me that… I think it is connected to ‘Potter,’ but maybe not in the way that everyone thinks, where everyone kind of just thinks, ‘Oh, he’s doing all this to put that behind him and get away from it,’” Daniel said.

“And actually, I think what it is more is that because I played one character for such a long time, and particularly towards the end of that 10 year period I started seeing like other British actors, you know, Aaron Johnson and Eddie Redmayne, Ben Whishaw and lots of people I sort of look up to, who go off and do, do loads of different projects and try lots of different things and I think it’s sort of, you know, there’s a little bit of envy and it sort of builds up inside yourself — that desire to just try as many different things as possible,” he continued. “So yeah, I guess now that I’m in a position that I can do that… I’m trying to while the going’s good.”

“A Young Doctor’s Notebook and Other Stories” Season 1 is available on Netflix. Season 2 premieres August/September on Ovation.
