LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas took their romance public in a big way on Saturday at Nickelodeon’s 23rd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards.

“We’ve never actually stepped out and held hands until today,” Demi told Access Hollywood on the orange carpet. “You know, in front of people. It’s fun though – he’s really special.”

The two sang a duet on “American Idol” last week, and even with an audience of millions, the new couple wasn’t too nervous.

“Not when you’re up there with your best friend. It’s really great,” Joe said, adding he was more worried about Simon, Randy, Ellen and Kara at the judges’ table.

“You get a little nervous because they’re judges,” he explained. “So you’re kind of like, ‘Oh, this is really weird,’ but it was cool.”

While eldest brother Kevin brought along his wife, Danielle, to the ceremony, Demi told Access that she and her JoBro boyfriend aren’t rushing into anything.

“We’re just having a good time,” she said.
