BURBANK, Calif. --
When I opened the lid of Dolly Parton’s new box set, perfectly titled “Dolly,” I knew I was going to be in for a surprise. It’s a known fact around the office at Access Hollywood that I love me some Dolly — my office is peppered with Dolly memories — but I admit I have not listened to a lot of her oldies but goodies in quite a while.
Sue me! I have my favorites, but now I have many more!
Inside this treasure box Dolly chose 99 gems. Throughout the weekend, I went from one disc to another hearing countless unheard stories only this superstar can tell through song. Remember her multi-million dollar fortune is not only because of her voice, her undeniable charm and her wit but also for her remarkable talent when she puts pen to paper. She’s written over 3000 songs in her career.
The haunting and heart breaking “Down from Dover” was the first tune that really caught my ear, then the love song “Here I Am,” and “Bargain Store” - an anthem for anyone with a broken heart to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and give it another try. The classics are among the 99.
My sister’s favorite, the Kenny Rogers duet “Islands in the Stream,” “9 to 5,” “Jolene,” “Starting Over Again,” and one of my all time disco-esque favorites that I played over and over and over “Potential New Boyfriend”!!! (Disc 4 cut 7).
Dolly ends this collection with a great ensemble from 1992. I’ll give you a hint. In the end, Dolly proclaims to her famous friends, “I’m old enough to be that boy’s lover!” Oh Dolly!
Dolly’s music is healing and empowering. If you’re having a bad day, pop in her music. It will get you going. Over the last few years I’ve had the great pleasure to meet and spend time with her. She even remembers me each time (note to self: That could be good or very very bad). In any case, I’ve told her a time or two or three how much she’s meant to me. She will never know exactly how much.
Dolly, thank you for “Dolly.”
