BURBANK, Calif. --
“Desperate Housewives” creator and showrunner Marc Cherry is reportedly in talks to develop a spin-off for next fall.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cherry is currently in discussions with ABC about the project, which will be co-executive produced with “Desperate” EP Alexandra Cunningham.
The new project reportedly will have the same tone as the hit ABC show, but currently does not have any set premise.
Cherry has repeatedly said that he will stay with “Desperate Housewives” until the end. A similar situation arose at ABC for another showrunner recently, “Grey’s Anatomy’s” Shonda Rhimes, who now also oversees spin-off “Private Practice.”
Reports surfaced last year that Cherry might spin off Kathryn Joosten’s character of Mrs. McCluskey, along with her sister, played by Lily Tomlin. The two characters launched a sort of old ladies’ private detective operation in last year’s “Desperate Housewives” story line. Since then, however, Joosten has said that she is battling a return of lung cancer.
Cherry was previously a staff writer for “The Golden Girls,” so he knows a thing or two about writing for older women.
