LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Hmmmm. What was going on at the Costume Institute Gala last night? The fashion debacles far outweighed the fashion homeruns.
Hey, I’m all for creative expression and being fashion forward and all that, I get it, I get it. But some of it was so over-the-top that it was over my head.
Madonna? Wow. Or more like WTF.
The headpiece? (Those “antlers” make her look like a deer caught in kleig lights) The thigh-high boots paired with the short puffy dress. What- is she a wench serving mugs of beer at a local pub?
Gossip Girl Leighton Meester, also in Louis Vuitton, was another disaster in my opinion. Love that she took a chance, but the busy tunic paired with busy neon orange leggings- OMG! Not even GG fashionista Blair Waldorf could pull off this getup with grace.
Rihanna made big news with her first public appearance since her incident with Chris Brown. She used the night to make a statement with her Dolce and Gabbana tux. It was very masculine, as if to say that she doesn’t need a man, thank you very much. The puffy shoulders look like they are on steroids.
Anne Hathaway told us she and her “pretty committee” were going for a “90’s supermodel” look, but I think her big hair was a big mess. Tyra’s braided do was a don’t in my book. And while Kate Moss’ lame mini dress was ok, her turban made her look like she should be reading fortunes.
MK Olsen was wearing what appeared to be a lace doily and Posh’s Polka Dots screamed 80’s prom dress.
There WERE a few highlights. Jessica Biel nailed high drama. She was simply ravishing in a red show-stopping Versace Atelier dress. Heidi Klum? Luminous in a couture J. Mendel silk tulle and organza gown.
Eva Mendes went the understated route in metallic Calvin Klein. I liked the teal color of Blake Lively’s Versace slit-to-there dress.
