LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Enough of the romantic comedies – Gerard Butler is going back to war.

Butler has signed on to star opposite Ralph Fiennes in “Coriolanus,” a contemporary big screen remake of William Shakespeare’s classic tale of political drama in ancient Rome, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While Fiennes will play the title character, Butler will play army commander Tullus Aufidius.

The film, which marks the directorial debut for Fiennes, also stars William Hurt and Vanessa Redgrave.

Production will begin shooting in Serbia in March 2010.

Butler shot to superstar status as King Leonidas in the 2007 epic battle film “300.” He currently stars in the recent box office releases “Law Abiding Citizen” and “Gamer.”

The actor will next be seen in “Bounty Hunter,” opposite Jennifer Aniston, which hits theaters in March 2010. Butler also lends his voice to the upcoming DreamWorks animated feature “How To Train Your Dragon,” also slated for a March 2010 release.
