“I had a wonderful time doing this job and playing this character,” Katie Holmes told us at the Los Angeles premiere of “The Kennedys” mini series, which is finally airing this weekend after lots of off-screen drama.
Posing for photos with husband Tom Cruise, Katie hit the red carpet in a summery Ralph Lauren dress accessorized with an “S” necklace, which of course, stands for Suri. Awww, cute!
You probably know that Katie plays Jackie Kennedy in the TV mini series, which airs this weekend on the Reelzchannel. As a working mom, Katie says she empathizes with the struggles the Jackie went through balancing motherhood and her public duties as First Lady.
“What I found amazing was, not only was she the youngest First Lady, she was 32 when she was in the White House, but she had such young children having that role and of course I sympathize with those moments where she had to leave her kids. In my life, I’m very fortunate because I am an actress and I can bring my daughter to the set, and I do, and we you know, every time there’s a break we do arts and crafts or swing on the swings if we’re by a park, so I feel very fortunate in that way.”
Taking on the iconic Jackie was no easy task for Katie.
“I found all the footage that there is available and just watched it over and over and we all worked with a dialect coach and I did a lot of research prior to starting shooting and you know we rehearsed,” she said. “And then at a certain point you just have to say, OK, I’m creating this character and this is what it’s going to be and just go for it.”
And go for it, she did! Fashion watchers will be in heaven! A wardrobe staff of fifteen created at least 40 looks for Katie, which also included some vintage clothing. She actually does look like Jackie.
“I think that the makeup and hair department did an incredible job and you know the brown contacts made a huge difference and so it was very, very helpful in transforming. We really wanted to honor these people and do the best work that we could.”
