Copper is hot! Jessica Alba, Blake Lively, Olivia Wilde and Katie Holmes have all been rocking the richly pigmented look.
“What color ushers in warm weather better than copper?” asks Celebrity Makeup Artist Brett Freedman, who has worked with Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Williams and Jessica Biel among others.
“A true copper has a distinct and deep orange hue… think of a copper kettle. For makeup, this isn’t always the best choice, but women of all skin tones can rock a beautiful copper eye with the right shade and technique. I find golden coppers are the most universally flattering. A good rule of thumb is that the deeper your skin tone (or tan), the more true copper you can go.”
Brett shares a few tips to help you work your best coppery look:
FAIR-SKINNED GALS: It’s best to choose a copper on the brown side (rather than an orangey tone). Try doing your full lid in a pale, fleshy shade like MAC shadow in Brule and then dampen a small, tight brush and apply shimmery copper eye shadow close to the lash line as an eyeliner. DermaMinerals pressed eye shadow in Halogen is a rustic copper brown shimmer that looks great on all skin tones. This technique gives a pop of copper without overpowering light skin tones.
MEDIUM SKIN TONES: Try doing a smokey eye with a touch of copper shimmer. Apply your favorite smokey eye style, but use brown shades instead of blacks or grays. As icing on the cake, take MAC Amber Lights and apply with a damp brush to lids up to the crease. It will dry to a glazed, cream shadow finish. Perfection!
DARK-SKINNED LADIES: Use true copper shades to brighten up the skin – if you err on the brown side, the color may blend into the skin too much – the warmer the shade, the better. Do a neutral shadow all over and rim the entire lash line (and inner rim) with a pigment-packed copper pencil with glisten like Sephora 06 Flashy Copper. The shimmer gives a light catching effect that’s very striking.
Anchor any bronze look with a bronze-tinged lip. Pale and medium gals should go with bronzy pink shades. Darker gals look great with bronze-tinged plums or wines.
