LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Santa isn’t the only one in red this time of year.
Red lips have been all over the red carpet on stars like Courteney Cox and Scarlett (how fitting!) Johansson and are perfect for the holidays. They can be tricky to pull off though, so CoverGirl Makeup Artist Molly R. Stern, who’s worked with Mandy Moore, Amy Adams and Ellen DeGeneres, gave us her professional lip tips.
“Red is a beautiful lip color for the holiday season and it’s important to choose the perfect shade that complements your skin tone,” says Molly. “Women with dark complexions, like Jennifer Hudson, look best in richer tones of red, like burgundy and berry, and should look for shades with blue-red undertones because they can support the boldness of a true red.”
“If you have a medium complexion, like Jennifer Lopez, opt for a warmer, more peachy tone to accent your bronze glow,” Molly adds. “Women that have a golden warmth to their skin look amazing in reds with orange undertones.” Molly says. “Fair-skinned beauties, such as Nicole Kidman, have all the fun when it comes to red lips because they can experiment with deep reds for a more dramatic look, or softer-reds, almost pinks, for a subtle daytime look. For women with fair complexions, it’s best to choose a shade with a blue-red undertone.”
“To prevent the color from bleeding, I recommend dusting powder around the edges of the lips to keep the color matte and lasting through the night,” Molly advises.
“For a little shine and a plump pout, apply a gloss starting at the center of your lips because it will make them appear fuller. To avoid the need to reapply after every sip of champagne or kiss under the mistletoe,” Molly uses CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor. “The red shades are rich and will last for hours.”
