LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- A whopping 80 percent of people who make New Year’s Resolutions fall off the wagon by Valentine’s Day. (You know who you are!)
The majority of resolutions are about getting fit, so what’s the best way to kick off a program and then stick with it?
Brian Abercrombie, a celebrity fitness trainer and health expert who has worked with Brad Pitt and Gerard Butler (for the film “300”!), helps you get motivated with five tips for fitness resolutions.
STOP DRINKING ALCOHOL FOR TWO WEEKS It will give you the feeling that you’re already doing something positive for yourself and you’ll probably lose a couple pounds in the process. Don’t drink? Then cut out sugar for 2 weeks. Watch what happens.
START It doesn’t matter what or how, just doing something physical every day is going to put you in the proper frame of mind and get you doing more. Newton wasn’t thinking of us when he posited the theory that a body in motion tends to stay in motion, but it seems to hold true that when we are more physical we tend to stay more physical.
HAVE A PLAN This is where I come in. Find someone or something to help you put together a fully realized regimen. Can’t afford a trainer? There’s an app for that. M-TRAIN is a take anywhere fitness app for your iPhone that is just like having a trainer in your pocket. I’m not joking.
SET GOALS Athletes train to a goal. I’d be the first to tell you working out can become a grind unless you are working toward something. Be it a few pounds or a couple of seconds, a goal will always keep you motivated.
CHANGE IT UP Workout anywhere and everywhere. Make everything you do a challenge and challenge yourself every day. Bike, hike, swim, mountain climb, swim up mountains. If it looks like fun, do it, chances are it probably will be and you’ll never have to ask yourself, “How do I get started?” again.
Brian is also a co-founder of the M-TRAIN app on iTunes. For more information go to www.m-train.com
