As always, the MTV Video Music Awards proved to be quite a show this year.

From the “Wow!” (Justin Timberlake and *NSYNC) to the “What?!” (Miley), the VMAs kept us talking long after the curtain dropped.

The one thing we can’t stop talking about? The hair!

The ladies ruled the carpet this year with jaw-dropping fashion and hair we’re lusting over. Glam Slam caught up with celebrity hairstylist Nunzio Saviano to fill us in on why our favorite hairstyles worked with the glamorous gowns.

Ariana Grande:
Sporting a cute floral print dress, Ariana kept her look “very girly and fun.” Her half-up ‘do is “soft and feminine, which works perfectly with her dress.”

Katy Perry:
Looking chic in a leopard print turtleneck dress, Katy kept it simple. Nunzio said that “a high ponytail goes well with a high neckline. With all the detail the dress has, if her hair was down, it wouldn’t have worked.”

Taylor Swift:
Rocking the retro curls and a navy gown, “the 1920’s finger-waves and dress looked elegant and glamorous while still being young and flirty.”

Ellie Goulding:
A tough dress paired with soft hair? It works! According to Nunzio, “the tousled, voluminous hair works with this dress- even the color is perfect! They’re both very sexy together.”

Selena Gomez:
With a lot of different textures on the dress, Selena made her navy and black dress work by “keeping her hair sleek and simple.” This kept her look “chic, fresh, and young.”
