LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

When you hear “sun protection” you probably instantly think about your skin, but your hair needs plenty of summertime TLC too. Hair can get fried from the sun, as well as, salt water and chlorine.

Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson, who has worked with Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie and Demi Moore reveals tips and products to help you protect your hair when spending time outdoors, at the beach or at the pool.

SHIELD YOUR HAIR
“There are a couple different ways you can protect your hair from the elements,” Ted says. “Make sure to wear a hat. For a woman on the go, I’d recommend Ted Gibson Hair Sheet Styling towelettes containing UV light absorbers, as well as vitamins A, B and E, which help to protect hair from the sun and environmental influences, including salt water and wind.” www.target.com

“For a do-it-yourself suggestion, I’d recommended filling a spray bottle with 2 parts water and 1 part sunscreen. You can spray the solution on to your hair for added SPF protection.”

PROTECT YOUR COLOR
My friend Susan was just asking me the other day how long she should wait to go into the pool after coloring her hair. Ted says ideally wait at least 7 to 10 days. If you can’t wait then make sure to use a conditioner that will help to protect hair from the harmful effects of chlorine.

DON’T GO GREEN
Chlorine can turn blonde hair green. “Wear a bathing cap,” Ted says. “Before putting the cap on, use a conditioner that will help to protect hair from the harsh chemicals in the pool.”

PREVENT FADING
The sun can fade your hair, so Ted suggests using color protecting shampoos and conditioners, which help preserve chemically treated hair. I myself am a big fan of Frederic Fekkai’s Technician Color Care products, which keep my blonde hair from turning brassy. www.fekkai.com
