LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

The much talked about “Gossip Girl” spin-off is finally a go.

The new series will focus on a teenage Lily van der Woodsen (the character played by Kelly Rutherford), growing up as Lily Rhodes in Los Angeles in the 1980s, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. confirmed to Access Hollywood.

After a falling out with her parents, a teenage Lily is forced to move in with her sister – the “black sheep” of the Rhodes family.

But while Lily spent her childhood as a “have,” attending a high-priced boarding school in Montecito, Calif., she must now adjust to life as a “have not,” as she moves to the Valley and enrolls in public school.

“Caught between two worlds, Lily dives into the fast-paced Sunset Strip and the Hollywood lifestyle of the ’80s, journeying over the hill to a world of wealth and excess that used to be her own,” according to a press release from Warner Bros.

The pilot episode introducing the new series will air as an episode of “Gossip Girl” on May 11.

The idea of a “Gossip” spin-off has been rumored for some time, with most fans expecting the new series to focus on Jenny Humphrey (played by Taylor Momsen), much like “The It Girl” book series spin-off.

However, in a previous interview with AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman, “Gossip Girl” executive producer Josh Schwartz shot down the idea that Jenny would be the spin-off’s central character.

“There are not talks for that show to happen. Never say never, but you know, Jenny Humphrey is a really important part of ‘Gossip Girl,’” Schwartz said.
