NEW YORK, New York --

The Upper East Side may be about to branch out.

The CW wants to launch a “Gossip Girl” spin-off next season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Nothing really tangible yet, but we’re talking about it,” CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff said. “If it’s the right idea, we’d all embrace it and be enthusiastic.”

Meanwhile, Variety reported the network may use a “Gossip Girl” episode later this season to launch the spin-off storyline.

The idea of a “Gossip” spin-off has been rumored for some time, with most fans expecting the new series to focus on Jenny Humphrey (played by Taylor Momsen), much like “The It Girl” book series spin-off did.

However, according to Variety, sources said that would not be the case, although the spin-off would likely center on one of the show’s main characters.

In a previous interview with AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman, “Gossip Girl” executive producer Josh Schwartz, seemed to support the idea that Jenny would not be the spin-off’s central character.

“There are not talks for that show to happen. Never say never, but you know, Jenny Humphrey is a really important part of ‘Gossip Girl,” Schwartz said.
