LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Miranda Bailey just can’t catch a break.
Just when it seemed Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) had found someone to make her smile on “Grey’s Anatomy,” series creator Shonda Rhimes is yanking her dreamy new doc Ben out from under Bailey’s grasp.
Jason George, who plays Seattle Grace newcomer Ben, has been tapped to join the cast of “Off the Map,” a new ABC drama pilot produced by Rhimes, a rep for ABC confirmed to Access Hollywood.
According to Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello, who first reported the news, George will play one of a handful of medical professionals who leave their jobs on the mainland to work at a clinic on a tropical island.
Other island-bound docs include “Without A Trace” actor Enrique Murciano and “Wonderfalls” actress Caroline Dhavernas.
At least Bailey will get a little action before Ben leaves – the upcoming March 11 episode will feature the couple’s first kiss. The episode was actually directed by Wilson and she was honored for her directing work on the episode during last week’s NAACP Image Awards.
“I feel so honored to be recognized,” she told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson following the awards, adding that she just finished directing her second “Grey’s” episode, which will air at a later date.
In other “Grey’s” casting news, Rhimes is getting ready to introduce a new character to the fold – with a twist.
Caterina Scorsone (“Castle”; Lifetime’s “Missing”) has been cast in the recurring role of Dr. Amelia Shepherd, the network confirmed to Access.
Last name ring a bell? It should.
She will play one of Derek Shepherd’s (Patrick Dempsey) never-before-seen sisters.
However, Scorsone won’t be lending her talents to Seattle Grace. Instead, she is joining the cast of “Private Practice” as a new practitioner at Oceanside Wellness.
No word yet on whether Dempsey will pay a visit to see his sister with Kate Walsh and company on “Private Practice.”
