Healthy Hollywood: Boomer Esiason's Run For Life
Former NFL football sensation Boomer Esiason’s greatest play is off the field as a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis.
Boomer’s son, Gunner, has the life-threatening lung disease (aka CF) and Boomer has worked hard to raise over $100 million in funds to help those suffering with CF through his charity, The Boomer Esiason Foundation.
Yet, Boomer tells Healthy Hollywood, he actually started working on behalf of CF fundraising four years prior to his son was diagnosis in 1993. He was inspired by journalist Frank Deford, who lost his daughter to cystic fibrosis.
“I felt there was some sort of destiny tied to this and it’s one of the reasons why I’m doing what I’m doing is because of all the families that we before us and suffer with CF now.
My jobs and my high-profile nature let me be able to leverage every particular relationship that I may have and try to raise as much money as I can,” Boomer told Healthy Hollywood.
Boomer got folks to lace up their sneakers and help raise funds on National Runner’s Day, which was this past Friday. The football great-turned-sports analyst teamed up with Timex, which donated $20,000 to the Boomer Esiason Foundation’s Team Boomer.
“For us in the world of cystic fibrosis and my foundation, we have a program called Team Boomer and Team Boomer is all about healthy living. It’s both for CF patients and those that support them to get out there and run and bike and swim and be active,” Boomer shared.
Boomer’s son is now 23 and a college graduate and has been athletic his entire life. And, Boomer says he also keeps an active lifestyle to inspire fellow CF supporters and also keep up his vitality.
“I’m a very active 53 years old. It’s not just for CF patients in our lives, it’s also important for anyone who is getting older. It’s important to stay healthy and out of the doctor’s office and best way to do that is to stay active,” noted Boomer.
