NEW YORK (November 16, 2006) — Chef Gordon Ramsay was about to enter the ultimate “Hell’s Kitchen.” But this time, the stakes were much greater than the ones on his popular reality competition on Fox television.
The famously fiery Ramsay was to debut his first U.S. restaurant Thursday night in New York City, where the food critics were anxiously circling and diners had booked the place solid for two months.
Called Gordon Ramsay at The London, the elegant restaurant with its French-influenced menu is located inside the London NYC Hotel in midtown.
The restaurant, which boasts a casual and formal dining area, is Ramsay’s biggest and most expensive gamble to date.
“The biggest,” Ramsay, 40, told The Associated Press shortly before the opening. “The till has to start working. New York is an expensive place to survive.”
The Michelin-starred, celebrity chef has a total of 10 restaurants in his culinary empire, including the successful Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London.
Born in Scotland, Ramsay is the author of the best-selling cookbook, “Gordon Ramsay Makes it Easy.”
