LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Former “American Idol” contender Sanjaya Malakar insisted he is not gay on Tuesday’s “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

The subject of Sanjaya’s sexuality was brought up by a handful of his Costa Rican jungle camp pals, including Holly Montag, after Janice Dickinson suggested the 19-year-old should put on some guy-liner.

“I just feel like she wants you to be gay or something,” Holly told her camp buddy when they were alone.

“She really does. Like, yeah, a lot of people want me to be their gay best friend and I make a really good gay best friend, but I, don’t like guys, so it confuses people,” Sanjaya explained.

The young man said he may not be gay, but he has an affinity with the community.

“I connect with gay people really well because we understand each other I’m like, ‘Hey!’ and they’re like, ‘Oh, hey!’ and I’m like, ‘No, but I’ll hang out with you,” the singer said.

Sanjaya said he believes people sometimes question his sexuality because of how he grew up.

“I’m not like that classic, stereotypical macho guy that’s like, ‘Oh yeah! Oh, she’s hot. I wanna get in her pants!’” he said. “I’m not that kind of guy. I was raised by women so I kind of have a connection with my feminine side, but I’m attracted to women so it’s like, people like to kind of throw that at me, like, ‘Oh, you must be gay’ but I’m like, ‘Whatever, gay people are awesome.’”

Additionally, while in a confessional cam on the NBC reality show, Sanjaya said his behaviors occasionally perplex others.

“I do hair and I’ll sit in the corner and knit, so it confuses people,” he said. “A lot of my friends refer to me as their ‘straight gay best friend’ because we’ll go do things that stereotypically you would do with a gay guy.”
