Caption Jay Leno and Donald TrumpLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It’s over. After a five-month run in primetime, “The Jay Leno Show” officially ended on Tuesday evening.
Jovial as ever, Jay, who will return to “The Tonight Show” on March 1, poked fun at his packed studio audience and recent increase in the ratings.
“Where were you the last five months? That’s what I want to know,” he said.
Jay also took a shot at the network’s decision to relieve him from his “Tonight Show” duties last year, and instead of letting him out of his contract, create a primetime show with the funnyman as the star.
“We were on the air five months,” he said. “It seems like just yesterday I was telling NBC, ‘This is not going to work.’”
In typical Jay fashion, he also took aim at a person in the spotlight.
“People say, ‘What has changed the most in five months?’ I’d have to say Heidi Montag,” he said, referring to “The Hills” star’s 10 plastic surgeries.
Jay’s final show was rounded out with a host of celebrity guests, including another person who won’t be returning to primetime – on the football field anyway – recently retired Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, who appeared in a segment with Ashton Kutcher.

Fellow NBC star Donald Trump also cropped up via satellite with a fitting ending to the show’s brief run, uttering his famous “Celebrity Apprentice” catch phrase, “You’re fired!”
