BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Jerry O’Connell will be sporting a Speedo this fall on the CBS comedy, “We Are Men.” In fact, he will be sporting a lot of them.
“I’ve counted four different colors [of Speedos] so far,” Jerry said on Monday of his on-set wardrobe as he addressed journalists during the CBS portion of the Television Critics Association Summer Tour in Beverly Hills. “I have a feeling we’re gonna hit pretty much every color in the spectrum if we’re lucky enough.”
Jerry’s character, the twice-divorced Stuart, lives an apartment complex, where he has adventures with his pals Frank (“Monk’s” Tony Shaloub), Gil (“House’s” Kal Penn) and the recently-ditched-at-the-altar Carter (Chris Smith). And when the men are lounging poolside, or occasionally chatting in one of their apartments, Stuart has a go-to outfit – the Speedo.
“It was not in the original script so it was a little bit of a surprise when I came to set and they wanted me to jump into those,” Jerry said of learning about his costume go-to for “We Are Men.” “It’s probably the most nerve-wracking part of this job for me, to put those on every morning. As you know, we got to work very early. It’s a little chilly outside, [and you are] maybe not in your best light. I mean it really is nerve-wracking. I’m continually trying to make sure blood is flowing to every part of my body.”
In order to look good in the tiny costume, Jerry said he’s changed up his routine.
“It’s non-ending, so it’s something that I have to embrace. I have joined a gym. I started drinking light beer,” he smiled. “It’s just something I’m gonna have to deal with for this role.”
For those who remember Jerry’s famous part as Vern Tessio in “Stand By Me,” Jerry said this role will give people a new physical impression of him.
“I was known as ‘Fat Kid’ from ‘Stand By Me.’ I guess I’ll be known as ‘Speedo Man’ from now on. It’s just something I have to deal with,” he said.
Jerry said that he did get some advice from his wife, Rebecca Romijn on how to look good in a swimsuit.
“My wife’s advice was, ‘Go get a tan, and do some push-ups and maybe take Pilates,’” he said.
“We Are Men” premieres September 30 at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.
