WASHINGTON, D.C.

President Barack Obama will deliver the keynote address and Aretha Franklin will headline the entertainers at this weekend’s dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall.

The dedication was postponed from late August because of Hurricane Irene.

DETROIT, Mich.

Aretha Franklin’s cousin says the ailing legendary singer is “doing better than doctors expected” and expects to be released from the hospital this weekend.

Brenda Corbett tells the Detroit Free Press for a Thursday story that Franklin “has a long life in front of her and will be back in concert, on stage, late spring or early summer.”

DETROIT, Mich.

Aretha Franklin underwent serious surgery last week and is “recovering very well,” her longtime friend, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, said Wednesday.

Jackson said in an interview with The Associated Press that he’s visited with the legendary singer four or five times recently, including a few days ago, and that Franklin’s “spirits are high, and her faith is strong.”

Michael Jackson’s boyhood hometown bade farewell to the King of Pop on Friday with a celebration of his life and music.

More than 6,000 people showed up for an upbeat memorial event that featured performers singing and dancing to his hits, video montages of Jackson and comments from the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Gary’s mayor and people who knew Michael Jackson when his family lived in Gary.
