John Lennon's Birthday Celebrated By Fans
NEW YORK (October 10, 2006) — John Lennon fans gathered in Central Park to celebrate what would have been his 66th birthday.
The fans, some of whom weren’t born when Lennon was killed in 1980, placed flowers and candles in the Strawberry Fields section of the park Monday and sang his songs.
“It’s always spontaneous. There’s nothing official,” said Thomas Leighton, co-founder of the John Lennon Memorial Committee. “The fans come on their own. They just gather.”
Lennon was shot to death on Dec. 8, 1980, in front of his apartment at the Dakota building, across the street from where the fans remembered him Monday.
