Jon Favreau Cooks Up Comedy In 'Chef'

Jon Favreau chats with Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Access Hollywood Live about his new comedy he wrote, produced, directed and stars in, “Chef.” What was it like returning to indie filmmaking after directing blockbusters? And, how much research did he do to play his role as a chef? “Chef” is in select theaters now.

Be careful. I'll have him home in time for school. Look like you are having so much fun. Give me one second. Your son can work the grill. What do you say? He says he misses you. Is. So funny. Sophia and helps Jon get his life back on track after his goose is cooked in chef. Jon wrote proud directed and stars in the deliciously entertaining comic, Talented as John Talented as John right there. Do you know what that is. John travolta. What is that. Never mind. Adele. One and only. Golden gloychbility I remember that. Oh, yes. Whatever it was. This movie is, thinks you back to your roots baby. Cowboy and iron man all the stuff this is going back. Thinks the little guy. The little one that I wrote. First time I wrote a script like this since swingers. I was in it. I directed it. Had to learn to be achieve for it. It was a great experience. You say that learned to be achieve. What did that entail. I worked with a guy achieve started off food truck movement and this is a guy who is traditional French chef who opens up a food truck so I reached out to him for my training and to oversee the memenu and he sent me off to French culinary school and I worked in the kitchen as prep cook and on the line to look authentic. Is this. I'm shoot maker. Daniel day lewis. Of my I am like an over weight Daniel day lewis. He was a cobbler. He took off and went two years to be a cobbler to make shoe. What is the hardest part. The chef the stand or hold the towel. Exactly right. That's what Roy was like you can tell everything about a chef about the way he hold as towel. What are you talking about. How tight it is. How neat. Grab the handle of the sauce pan. And what you are thinking about. Because everybody, you know, would he yell at me for things like hitting my spoon too hard on the pan. I'm like I'm cleaning the spoon. No you ever showing off. Chef doesn't go bang bang. Okay. And being an actor you are a good mimic you learn things very quickly because of times I come in before a take. No matter what the movie is and show you how to handle the gun or use the computer and you have to lack like you have been doing it your whole life so I was pretty quick study in the kitchen. Now I still do it with my family. At home with your wife I got this. No I totally do I'm smoking brisket. Working in the kitchen. Chef don't like granite and marble they like stainless steel and open shelves so our kitchen is transform ING into a restaurant kitchen. Oh, no. John. You play Karl Casper the chef and you have a melt down. A critic writes. Critic by oliver plat in real life his brother is the restaurant critic. Adam plat for "The New York times". So he write this is horrible review and you absolutely lose it. Dustin Hoffman the owner of the strupt where you work and you go ballistic on this food critic. Cathartic in a way wanting to go ballistic on a film critic. All your film are loved. The critic are nice to me. I was scared to read the review people are going to think I hate critic. I don't. They have been very good to me my whole ceevrment I get sad at worst. I cry in my car if I get a bad review. I don't get mad generally about that kind of thing but it was fun to scream at oliver plat because he beat me out for role in 20 years. Is he the guy. I would audition for stuff and then I would go to the movie and he's in it is what would happen. Your friends with even. Casting the movie I bet no achlingt did you pick up the phone and call everybody. It was funny. The agents are help. They know on the movie no money. You Robert Downey Jr. He's your iron man what I did 4. I made a call to scarlet very cool but like Sophia I never met her I just loved her on modern family thought she would be great. And same thing with I knew them and soil met with and September the script and had dinner. There you are getting along just fine with Sophia. I love that. In theater everybody cheered this week in the movies. Everybody is clapping whcn it's over. So feel good. Thank you. Chef in select theaters right now.
