TLC: ‘Kate Plus 8’ No Longer ‘In Production’

As the series finale for “Jon & Kate Plus 8” draws near, it appears the reported successor – “Kate Plus 8” – could be over before it even started.

While the original TLC series, which turned Jon and Kate Gosselin into pop culture and tabloid mainstays, will end on Monday night, the future of the “Plus 8” franchise appears to be in doubt, according to TLC.

Jonathan Keith Gosselin was born on April 1, 1977 in Wyomissing, PA as the middle child of three boys. On October 5, 1997 Jon met Kate Kreider at a picnic and the two were married on June 12, 1999. Soon after, Kate was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and they decided to pursue infertility treatments. It was successful and on October 8, 2000, they gave birth to twin girls Cara Nicole and Madelyn (Mady) Kate. Three years after the birth of the twin girls, Jon and Kate decided undergo the process again in the hopes of having another child, however, this time they had six.

The Gosselin sextuplets – three boys named Aaden, Joel, and Collin, and three girls named Leah, Hannah, and Alexis – were born on May 20, 2004. They were featured on the Discovery Health Channel in the 2006 special, “Surviving Sextuplets and Twins.” The audience fell in love with the family, and a follow-up aired on the channel a year later, titled “Surviving Sextuplets and Twins: One Year Later.” TLC then took the popular specials and turned them into the series, “Jon & Kate Plus 8.” As the success of the show grew, the Gosselins moved from a modest home to a $1.1 million estate in southeastern Pennsylvania.

In early 2009, rumors swirled in the pages of Us Weekly magazine of affairs and a rocky marriage, and practically overnight the show became a tabloid sensation. By May of that year, there were photos of Jon’s alleged affair with third grade school teacher Deanna Hummel. On June 22, 2009, Jon and Kate publicly announced their separation and filed for divorce.

In 2009, Jon started dating 22-year-old Hailey Glassman, the daughter of the doctor who performed Kate’s tummy tuck after the birth of the sextuplets. On September 29, 2009 TLC decided to rename the show “Kate Plus Eight.” Two days later, on October 1, 2009 Jon claimed that the show is detrimental to his kids, and halted production.
