LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- A judge says the son of Ryan O’Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett is making excellent progress in a drug treatment program and appears to be making the right decisions.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz repeatedly praised Redmond O’Neal during a hearing Tuesday. He says he will delay sentencing O’Neal for a probation violation as long as the 27-year-old keeps doing well in the program.

O’Neal told the judge he is studying for his GED and confronting his demons through counseling. The judge says if O’Neal’s progress continues, he should consider a career in addiction counseling.

The actors’ son was arrested last year for heroin possession. He was ordered into inpatient rehab but faces up to six years behind bars if he relapses.
