overview

Katie “Kate” Irene Kreider (aka: Kate Gosselin) was born March 28, 1975 to Charlene and Kenton Kreider in Hersey, PA at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. On October 5, 1997 she met Jon Gosselin at a picnic. The couple was married less than two years later on June 12, 1999. After she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Jon and Kate began infertility treatments. On October 8, 2000, they gave birth to twin girls, Cara Nicole and Madelyn (Mady) Kate. Three years after the birth of the twins, they decided to have another child. But this time, Kate carried six babies.

The Gosselin sextuplets – three boys named Aaden, Joel, and Collin, and three girls named Leah, Hannah, and Alexis – were born on May 10, 2004. They were featured on the Discovery Health Channel in the 2006 special, “Surviving Sextuplets and Twins.” A year later, the channel aired a follow-up titled “Surviving Sextuplets and Twins: One Year Later.” TLC then took the popular specials and turned them into the series, “Jon & Kate Plus 8.” As the success of the show grew, the Gosselins moved from a modest home to a $1.1 million estate in southeastern Pennsylvania.

In 2008, along with Beth Carson, Kate and Jon released the book “Multiple Blessings: Surviving to Thriving with Twins and Sextuplets.” In November of that year, “Multiple Blessings” made The New York Times bestseller list a week after its release. A year later, Kate released the second book, “Eight Little Faces.”

More than 4 million viewers tuned in to “Jon & Kate Plus 8” each week and it was estimated the family earned $25,000 to $50,000 per episode, while tension continued to escalate between Jon and Kate. In early 2009, rumors swirled in the pages of Us Weekly magazine of affairs and a rocky marriage, and practically overnight the show became a tabloid sensation. By May of that year, there were photos of Jon’s alleged affair with third grade school teacher Deanna Hummel. On June 22, 2009, Jon and Kate publicly announced their separation and Kate filed for divorce.

Kate continued making media appearances and filled in as a co-host on “The View.” Although she vowed to keep the divorce private, it later became a public affair with accusations on both sides of money stealing. On September 29, 2009 TLC decided to rename the show “Kate Plus Eight.” Two days later, on October 1, 2009 Jon claimed that the show is detrimental to his kids, and halted production.
