Katharine McPhee might have won over America’s heart as the runner-up pop-singing sweetheart on Season 5 of “American Idol,” but the 25-year-old is unleashing her inner-rebel with a bold new look, to coincide with the release of her second album.

“I was feeling rebellious. That’s when I knew I wanted something big,” Katharine, who is now sporting a new short blonde hairdo, told SHAPE Magazine in its February issue. “So I said to my stylist, ‘Just chop it all off and make me a blonde!’”

The singer/actress said she felt empowered by her new look – and she was even inspired to get new threads to match her new ‘do.

“I felt edgy and playful,” she explained. “I went out and bought new clothes for the new me. It was definitely a good thing to do.”

In addition to her new look, Katharine – who has struggled with bulimia for seven years – told the mag she is doing better than ever through some hard work and a little perspiration.

“The more I focused on my weight, the worse my bulimia got,” she explained. “Now I’m more easygoing. I stopped fighting myself and became more forgiving of my body. Ironically, the weight came off naturally through exercise but no dieting.”

She’s even been given a clean bill of health.

“At my last physical, the nurse took my vitals and said, ‘Wow, you must be taking care of yourself! Your blood pressure is perfect. You’re very healthy,’” Katharine told the mag. “Hearing her say that made me feel better than seeing an ideal number on the scale.”
