Katy Perry is hoping that including the high and lows of her life – including her split with ex-husband Russell Brand – in her new documentary will help others coping with their own relationship woes.

Access Hollywood correspondent Michelle Beadle sat down with the 27-year-old star at the junket for “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” on Thursday, where the singing superstar explained why she chose to open up her personal life to the cameras.

“When I decide to do something, I do it wholeheartedly… that’s what I strive to be, is connect with the truth, with everything I do especially artistically and creatively,” Katy explained. “And if it’s an extension of my music, which this film is an extension of my music, because it’s all about how I got here and how I wanted people to hear my songs… I do it honestly.”

Katy’s honesty also included chronicling her split from the British actor/comedian after just 14 months of marriage.

“I didn’t get too detailed about the specifics because I believe that that’s only supposed to be between the two people that are in it,” she continued.

“I just wanted to encourage people to let them know that it’s okay if they have problems. It’s okay if they’re going through a situation, they don’t have to lay down and die,” a passionate Katy told Michelle.

The cameras also captured the singer not always looking her best, something she’s at peace with the world seeing.

“I wanted to keep those scenes in the movie, especially the scenes where I don’t look the greatest, where I am full of zits, fully bloated and exhausted because that is the reality,” she added. “I think the idea that you have to be perfect in order to achieve your dream is fake.”

“Katy Perry: Part of Me” hits theaters on July 5.
