overview
Katy Perry was born as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. Both of her parents were pastors, and Katy grew up singing in the church. In 2001, she recorded her first CD “Katy Hudson” which was Christian gospel music. She moved to Los Angeles when she was eighteen, and afraid that her name sounded too close to Kate Hudson, she changed her name to Katy Perry. Perry was her mother’s maiden name.
In 2004, Blender Magazine named Katy “The Next Big Thing.” In 2007, she signed with Capitol Music Group and her EP was released later that year entitled “Ur So Gay.” Her full-length album, “One of the Boys,” was released on June 17, 2008 and her first single from the album, “I Kissed A Girl” was released on May 6, 2008.
The song became an overnight hit, topping the charts in over 20 countries. It was certified Double Platinum in the U.S. on October 31, 2008 and “I Kissed A Girl” is a nominee for the 2009 Grammy Awards in the category Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
