Kirstie Alley Reveals John Travolta Tried To Discourage Her From 'Dancing': He Said 'Don't Do It – Just Act'
Kirstie Alley has made no secret of her struggle with weight issues, and now, she’s getting back on top — looking trim and feeling good-- thanks to her grueling “Dancing with the Stars” exercise schedule.
However, the former “Fat Actress” star says she almost turned down the ballroom opportunity on the advice of a close friend.
“[John] Travolta said — he was the first person I went to — and he said, ‘Don’t do it, don’t do it. Just act, just act,’” Kirstie told Access Hollywood guest correspondent Jayde Donovan at her and professional partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s “DWTS” rehearsal in Los Angeles on Thursday. “And my advice was that from everyone, because they just like me to be an actress.”
Luckily, the 60-year-old dynamo ignored the advice of her friends, and is now one of three contenders vying for Season 12’s mirrorball trophy.
“I thought, ‘Screw all my [friends] I don’t care.’ I really don’t care what anybody says,” she said. “One thing I’m good at is introspection, and I knew that I had gotten in a bad place — sort of complacent. I was boring myself, let alone anybody else! I was boring. I was like, ‘This will unbore me.’ It did unbore me!”
Now, the hilarious former “Cheers” star is beginning to gain back her confidence.
“I’m actually starting to become myself again, which is good,” she said. “I feel good, I feel sort of like I’m almost back to normal. I don’t know where the hell I went for a while… I went on a journey.”
In addition to the obvious weight loss, Kirstie said she’s also enjoying the newfound strength she’s earned through hours of endurance-building dance rehearsal.
“The thing that I like the most is I just feel really, really strong and really limber, and that feels pretty natural to me,” she said. “I love that feeling. I don’t feel weak at all, and I was feeling a little bit weak.”
For the show’s upcoming final performances, Kristie will be wearing a dress that may look familiar to fans of the hit reality series, as it’s the same costume she wore for this season’s first show.
However, the mother of two proudly stated that due to her recent weight loss, the costume would have to be taken in. Plus, she wants the cut out in back enlarged to show off her hard-earned booty.
“I want to see my ass crack! That’s what I’m going to see,” she said. “I worked hard for these dimples, and by God I’m going to show them off every place I go!”
