overview
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born on March 28, 1986 in Yonkers, New York but became well known by her stage name, Lady GaGa.
She took to music early, learning piano at the age of four and performing at open mics by 14. At 17, Lady GaGa gained early admission to the New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where she studied music and songwriting.
GaGa got her first break when she was 19 and signed with Def Jam Records, but only three months later she was dropped from the label. In August 2007, she was invited to play at Lollapalooza and her performance with Starlight was well received. She also began writing for several artists including Fergie, Britney Spears, and New Kids on the Block.
She released her 2008 debut album, “ The Fame,” to mostly positive reviews, and the album reached a peak of #4 in the United States. Her second single, “Poker Face,” was released in September 2008, and became GaGa’s second consecutive number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2009.
