“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” is heading West.
A source revealed to Access Hollywood on Tuesday that later this month, an episode of the New York City based crime drama will be shot on the West Coast for the first time in show’s history.
The episode will focus on an investigation involving a rape kit, which will take Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) from New York City to Los Angeles. The episode will shoot while Mariska is in LA for the Primetime Emmy Awards later this month. Mariska is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the event.
Victims of sexual crimes have found an advocate in Mariska, who visited Washington, D.C., in March to lobby against rape kit backlogs. The 46-year-old actress also founded the Joyful Heart Foundation (an organization which aims to empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse) in 2004 after discovering staggering sexual assault statistics while preparing for her role on “SVU.”
The West Coast episode will air on September 29 and will also introduce Skeet Ulrich’s character (Det. Rex Winters) from “Law & Order: Los Angeles” before he appears in the LA franchise, which makes its debut on NBC later that night.
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, “Meet the Parents” actress Teri Polo is the latest addition to the “Law & Order: Los Angeles” cast, and will play Skeet’s on screen wife — a former hard-nosed cop who retires to have a family.
Catch the two-hour season premiere of “Law & Order: SVU” on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 9 PM on NBC.
