LONDON, U.K. --

Songstress Leona Lewis is speaking out after being attacked by a fan during a book signing in London on Wednesday.

“Yesterday was a horrible shock and left me extremely hurt and upset,” Lewis wrote in a message on her Web site on Thursday. “I’m very sorry to those I wasn’t able to meet at the signing.”

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, the “Bleeding Love” singer was slapped at Waterston’s bookstore in Piccadilly while she was signing copies of her new autobiography, “Dreams,” a Scotland Yard spokesperson confirmed to Access.

“Leona was the victim of an unprovoked attack this afternoon at her book signing,” a rep for Lewis told Access on Wednesday. “The police were called immediately and medical attention has been sought. Leona is understandably shaken and apologizes to the fans she was unable to meet and complete signings.”

According to the UK’s Press Association, Peter Kowalczyk, 29, has been arrested and charged with assaulting the singer, who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Kowalczyk is reportedly due in court on October 26.

“Thank you so much for your support it is truly overwhelming,” Lewis’ message to her fans on her Web site said. “Thank you again for all of the lovely messages.”
