UPDATED May 27, 2007) – Lindsay Lohan was in a car accident at approximately Saturday morning, following a widely-reported night of partying, and was cited for suspicion of DUI, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department.

The accident occurred at the corner of Sunset and Foothill. Lohan was driving and had two passengers riding in her 2005 Mercedes Benz. An eyewitness called the cops via 911 when they saw the car strike the curb, but Lohan and the passengers had left by the time cops arrived.

Lt. Mitch McCann said it appeared the actress was speeding, and that officers investigating the crash found a “usable amount” of a drug tentatively identified as cocaine. He declined to say where the drug was found but that “it was not on her person.”

After the crash, Lohan got into a second car and was driven to a hospital in nearby Century City for treatment of minor injuries and was then released.

The two other people in her car were not hurt.

Officers received a 911 call about the accident and arrested Lohan at the hospital for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, McCann said.

She was released from custody because she was admitted to the hospital, police said.

McCann declined to comment on Lohan’s blood-alcohol level. He said the case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office where the actress could face more charges, including felonies. Her tentative arraignment date is Aug. 24.

Lindsay’s estranged father, Michael Lohan, gave a statement to X-17 ONLINE, which reads:

“Lindsay needs to find God, get better, clean house and start all over again with the people who were there for her at the beginning: her family. Too many people are around Lindsay for the wrong reasons. They want to see what they can get from her instead of caring about Lindsay herself. I’m her father. I don’t want anything from her but her love and to be her father first. I’m here for Lindsay as a father and a father only.

And it’s about time that her mother Dina stop building up the walls of division between myself and my children—especially Lindsay. And if Dina really cares about our children--especially Lindsay-- then she should do the right thing so we can both be there as parents. Because what Lindsay needs are both parents. I wish Dina would put things aside and act the way God wants us to: right the wrongs and not compound the wrongs.

I hope Lindsay finally gets the help that she needs. I want her to know that her Daddy is here for her.”

Lohan publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnik has not yet responded to calls and emails seeking comment.

The crash was Lohan’s third accident in about two years. In October 2005, Lohan and a passenger received minor injuries when her convertible hit a van in West Hollywood. Authorities said the van driver, who also received minor injuries, was at fault. Months earlier, Lohan collided with a minivan when she made a U-turn as the van, carrying paparazzi, followed her from a Los Angeles restaurant. A photographer was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon but prosecutors declined to charge him.

The young actress’s latest movie, “Georgia Rule,” opened two weeks ago to poor reviews and even worse box office numbers.
