Lupita Nyong’o continues her winning ways, taking home a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role in “12 Years A Slave” and getting raves for her red carpet style.
Her vibrant Gucci gown was a standout and so was her dramatic makeup.
Here is how her beauty look was created.

I try to approach every awards show differently, but it all starts from what Lupita is wearing. Her dress is this gorgeous green color that has all of these beautiful flowers across the chest so I wanted to do something with the eyes that reminded me of butterflies on flowers, but I didn’t want it to be really matchy-matchy. So instead of using just a green, I played with three different colors. Lupita can carry color like nobody else.
I started Lupita’s makeup by massaging CHANEL Sublimage L’Essence Essential Revitalizing Concentrate and Sublimage La Creme Yeux into her skin to create a perfect canvas. I let it sit for five minutes, and then I blotted it off with a piece of tissue so it left behind just enough moisture.
As things were going to be so colorful on her eyes, I didn’t want Lupita to look like she was wearing blush. So I dusted CHANEL Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Emotion onto the apples of her cheeks for a soft, golden, plum-y kiss to add dimension. The color is perfect for her skin. Then I applied CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour in No. 70 onto her T-zone, under her eyes, onto the bridge of her nose, and along her chin because on darker skin, you want to brighten the face for the red carpet.
On the eyes, instead of using a green to match her dress, I used a blue, a purple, and a yellow. All the colors are varying in brightness—the blue is the brightest, then the purple is a little more deep, and the yellow is really shimmery. It’s important to pick one color that’s really the statement with a look like this. Smudging the blue color from CHANEL Quadra Eye Shadow in Fascination from the inner corner of Lupita’s eyes to the center, I applied CHANEL Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Amethyst from the outer corner towards the center, but the two colors did not meet. Then I used CHANEL Limited Edition Le Crayon Khol Intense Eye Pencil in Peche Cuivre, a shimmering yellow, in the center of Lupita’s eyes, blending it into the other two other colors with my fingers. Diffusing upwards, I used CHANEL Small Eyeshadow Brush #15 to combine them all together to make sure you couldn’t see where each color ended. I used the same yellow pencil along the brow bone as well. To make the eyelashes appear fuller, I pressed CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Intense into the lash line moving outwards, and then I applied two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir on the upper lash line only. I kept the lower lash line uncomplicated by dragging CHANEL Stylo Yeux Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Violine from the inner corner to the outer corner and topping that with the same purple eyeshadow I used before. I didn’t play up Lupita’s brows too much, either, but I wanted them to look polished. So instead of using a black brow pencil, I used CHANEL Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Brun Cendré to create a fuller shape, and then I went over that with a shimmery, bronzy eye shadow to tone them down even more.
I was playing with the idea of using a more neutral color on her lips, but then I thought—why not; let’s go for it with a pink peony shade! Normally, if you do color on the eyes, you don’t use color on the lips, but we broke all the rules with this look. To make it more like a stain, and not too lipstick-y, I just removed the color as I went. I always start with CHANEL Rouge Coco Baume Hydrating Conditioning Lip Balm and let it sit on the lips before I blot it off. Then I traced around the edges of Lupita’s lips with CHANEL Le Crayon Levres Precision Lip Definer in Framboise and filled it all in. Once I blotted that off, and applied CHANEL Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Passion , which I also blotted off so her lips were a bright pink, but not too bright.
