Madonna Talks GLAAD Awards Cub Scout Uniform; Singer Still Has 'Axes To Grind' (Access Exclusive)
Madonna caused a stir over the weekend when she appeared at the at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday night in a Cub Scout uniform – something she exclusively talked to Access Hollywood about backstage at the awards show.
“I want to be a Boy Scout or a Cub Scout and I think it’s messed up that they’re so strict and conservative with their admission and they don’t allow people who are gay to join and I’m not happy about that,” Madonna, who was on hand to honor Anderson Cooper with GLAAD’s Vito Russo Award, told Access’ Michelle Beadle.
As for how the pop star got the uniform, Madonna joked that she went to great lengths to get the authentic getup.
“I said it was for my son,” she joked. “Yeah, I did. I lied… arrest me.”
The longtime ally of the LGBT community said she was glad to show up to honor Anderson, while also continuing to voice her concerns about equality.
“I had a few axes to grind and I feel like I’ve had them to grind for the last 30 years. And it’s come out in my work, but it was a pleasure to have this opportunity to grind those axes in honor of [Anderson],” Madonna said. “I think the world is changing at a crazy fast pace and it seems like were becoming more advanced and more open-minded… but then on the other hand, we’re not, we’re kind of going backwards and it’s a little bit scary.”
Anderson was overjoyed to have the pop star present him with one of the night’s biggest honors.
“When I heard Madonna was going to do this, I didn’t think it was real at first… I’m obviously a huge fan and beyond a huge fan of her artistry, I really admire what she’s done for the gay/lesbian/bisexual community, really from the beginning of her career,” he told Access. “As a young gay man, growing up in New York, to have Madonna out there speaking for me was incredibly impactful, incredibly important. And so for her to be here tonight speaking to me, speaking to this group, it really, it meant a huge amount.”
