Magic Johnson On Supporting His Son When He Came Out

Magic Johnson opens up on Access Hollywood Live about when he went public 22 years ago with the news he was HIV-positive. How supportive was his wife, Cookie? How is he feeling today? Plus, what does he think about NBA player Jason Collins coming out as gay recently? And, when did his son, EJ, come out to him?

When he came to me a week later and said I am going to go public with this. You know it scared me to death because there was a lot of stigma back then. Magic's wife cookie talking to us "Access Hollywood live". The powerful powerful message cookie was talking about when you told the world that you were HIV positive and how she was your rock during that time. Yes Shaun you are right because it could have went either way. I didn't know. I thought she would stay but I wasn't for sure. Didn't she like smack you or something said you condition leaf if you want didn't she smack you. I would understand if you weren't to leave. She mit me so hard. Not at the announcement that telling her that she could. After that she said we can beat this together. That's what I needed to do everything I had to do, you know, have a positive attitude. Take my medicine. Work out. All those things and you need a support system behind you. So she was right there with me. My kids supported me and then my family and friends. So that made it easier for me to go and do what I had to do. Magic, do you think that because you are so healthy today some 20 years after your announcement that people look at you and say magic survived this and so I can be a little risky with my behavior. Do you ever find that that is a concern that you have. Yes. Because I have been the curse and blessing for HIV. I became the face of HIV and AIDS which is good and then everybody ran and got tested and so on but that was 22 years ago. Now because I'm doing so well everybody thinks that now they can still have the same behavior and also they feel if I get it, I can be like magic. But we have to remember the virus acts different if all of us and early detection saved my life. So a lot of people, especially in the black and brown community are not getting tested. We need them to go get tested because people are walking around with HIV and don't know they have it. 22 years. How are you feeling today. Today wonderful. I get up every morning about 4 or 4:15 and at the gym working out every morning. About 5 5:30. So I do an hour cardio. Hour with the weights then I go do Tai Bo. Do you wear shorts with Tai Bo. I wish. I do trainers every day and Charles and so I just could my thing and I'm healthier now probably now than 22 years ago. One of the vice is potatoes chips. You are paid spokesperson for bring el. Tell us what you are doing with them. Bring el has introduced a new tortilla chip for the first time. Did you bring us any. I brought you some. In the cute can. In the cute can and they have south west ranch. They have I love the cheese nacho cheese and the original flavor and it's all about having a great party. You have to have snacks and so bring el supply some great tortilla chips check it out everybody. Jason Collins recently came out what did you think of his announcement. I love it. I was happy for him because now he gets to live free. Everybody he doesn't have to hide who he is any more. He just gets to be himself. I love that. My son ej came out so they get both of them just get to live free and be themselves and also both of them got a lot of support. Jason got a lot of support now playing with the New Jersey nets. Playing good basketball so I love it. I love it. Everybody should just let people be themselves and enjoy their lives and not criticize or judge soychbility we had Dion sanders and asked about gist on Collins and players out we all new players in the locker room gay and we protected they will. Did you know any players back in the day that were gay. They are just people. In the just players. I don't even think about it. But the players for Dion it was not a big deal. Of course. Of course you know players but again you want to protect them because if they don't come out you are not going to say anything to anybody else because you want to protect their privacy. But at the same time you didn't judge them. You were their friend and hung out with them and did everything you are supposed to did as friend. I love hearing. That I love that. They can say who they are today and not be judged. Exactly. Look when I first announced 22 years ago, just like still today unfortunatelylike still today unfortunately, a lot of discrimination against people who were HIV or against gay and it shouldn't be that way. We should just live and let people live their lives and support them just like you want to be supported. Right. And so that's what it should be all about. When did your son Kim come out to you. How old was he. He was in his teens. But we pretty much knew and so I told ej. Were you waiting for him. Exactly. Exactly. And be comfortable to come to us so when he came to us. We support you. We love you. Nothing has changed. And now. Couldn't ask for better parents. Thank you. I appreciate it. His life, career has taken off. I'm so proud of him. I need to meet ej. Yes tell him to come on "Access Hollywood". I'll tell him. Before we let you go, have you made the billionaire list yet. Are we in the B. No not yet. Not yet. You are close right. A few dollars short. There you go. I'm getting there I'm getting there I'm getting there. Final thing magic Michigan state going to win it all. Michigan state going to whip it all. I feel really good. They are playing their best basketball right now. They are healthy. We have the best coach in college basketball. So I'm happy. Do you whisper in his ear let's do this or run this defense. No he doesn't need any help. I just go and support him and support the team and the football team won the rose bowl now we want the basketball team to win the national championship. How many businesses do you have, L.A.
