NEW YORK, N.Y.

“The Book of Mormon” nabbed a leading 14 Tony Award nominations Tuesday morning, earning the profane musical nods for best musical, best book of a musical, best original score, two leading actor spots and two featured actor nominations, among others.

The second-highest nominations went to “The Scottsboro Boys,” a searing tale of 1930s injustice framed as a minstrel show. It received 12 nominations, including best musical, best book of a musical, best original score as well as a leading actor and two featured actor nods.

NEW YORK, N.Y.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation’s lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, today announced it will honor pioneering entrepreneur and philanthropist Russell Simmons and Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of Entertainment at NBC, at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

Simmons will receive the Excellence in Media Award at the New York award ceremony on Saturday, March 19, 2011, presented locally by American Airlines and Prudential at the Marriott Marquis Times Square. Greenblatt will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the Los Angeles event on Sunday, April 10, 2011, presented locally by Wells Fargo at the Westin Bonaventure.

Molly Shannon is making her Broadway debut in the musical “Promises, Promises,” opposite Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth. Last month, Shannon replaced Katie Finneran, who won a Tony Award in the role of bar fly Marge MacDougal.

SAN DIEGO, Calif.

“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” won over Comic-Con.

At the end of Universal Pictures’ “Scott Pilgrim” panel at the pop-culture convention Thursday, director Edgar Wright had a surprise for the crowd. He invited anyone handed a button marked with an 8-bit rendition of the title character’s face at the start of the session to follow the filmmaker to a world premiere screening of the movie.
