The somewhat surprising news prompted Steve Levitan, co-creator of the LGBT-inclusive ABC series, to thank the politician’s wife for her support while offering her an ironic role on the award-winning sitcom.
“Thrilled Ann Romney says ModFam is her favorite show,” he Tweeted on Tuesday.
“We’ll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam’s wedding. As soon as it’s legal,” he added, referencing the series’ gay couple played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet.
Levitan’s tongue-in-cheek offer was seemingly meant as a dig at Mr. Romney, who has stated he believes marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman.
“Modern Family” returns with the premiere of Season 4 on September 26 at 9/8c on ABC.
