Oprah Winfrey says she understands why some balked when the film academy announced it would give her an honorary Oscar for her humanitarian contributions.

The 57-year-old media mogul will receive the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award on Saturday at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ third annual Governors Awards.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.

“The King’s Speech” won the best-actor trophy Sunday for Colin Firth and a second honor for its overall cast at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The two prizes capped a weeklong surge of Hollywood honors for the British monarchy saga, which is building momentum for the Feb. 27 Academy Awards, where the Facebook drama “The Social Network” previously had looked like the favorite.

Natalie Portman earned the best-actress award at the Screen Actors ceremony for “Black Swan,” while “The Fighter” co-stars Christian Bale and Melissa Leo swept the supporting-acting honors, boosting their own prospects come Oscar night.

PARK CITY, Utah

It’s a winter ritual at the Sundance Film Festival: As organizers present this year’s crop of independent films, they’ll get to see how last year’s fared at the coinciding Academy Awards nominations.

At least four dramas that premiered at Sundance a year ago — including “Winter’s Bone,” '‘Blue Valentine” and “The Kids Are All Right” — have strong prospects at Tuesday’s Oscar nominations, which come right in the middle of the 11-day festival. And seven of the 15 films on the short-list for the documentary Oscar nominations also debuted at Sundance in 2010.

Could the acclaimed 2009 film “Precious” possibly spawn a sequel?

The New York Observer reports that Sapphire, the author of the original novel “Push,” which was adapted into the film “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire,” has sold a second book to Penguin Press to be published in Summer 2011.
